Foreign interference inquiry hears of alleged money transfers from China
Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) director David Vigneault has testified at the foreign interference inquiry that the agency had intelligence before Canada's 2019 election that China's government attempted to funnel about $250,000 through a network, possibly to interfere in Canadian elections.
Global News first reported on this activity in 2022, citing national security sources.
As David Akin explains, the commission has received a summary of classified material produced by CSIS that includes many of the details Global News first reported.

CRA's last-minute bare trust rule change sparks frustration among Canadian taxpayers
The recent decision by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) to retract bare trust reporting rules has resulted in relief for some Canadians.
However, for others, the news comes as too little, too late, as they have already spent hundreds of dollars on tax preparation fees.
The new rule was introduced this year, and many Canadians were unaware of its existence and whether they were a part of such an arrangement.
As Global's Naomi Barghiel reports, announcing the rule changes at the last minute has caused frustration among taxpayers.

Trudeau testifies at public inquiry into foreign interference in Canada's elections | FULL
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an appearance at a federal inquiry into foreign interference on Wednesday, following several days of testimony from members of his cabinet, political party representatives, senior bureaucrats and intelligence officials. At the hearing, the prime minister listed measures his government had taken to address foreign interference since assuming power in 2015.
The inquiry has already heard that China and other state actors attempted to interfere, but there has been little evidence so far to indicate whether or not they were successful.

Europeans soak up sun as EU climate agency reports hottest March on record
The European Union’s climate agency says Earth experienced record heat for the 10th consecutive month in March.
Those unusually high temperatures have continued across much of Europe in April, with many flocking to beaches or finding other ways to beat the heat on Monday.
Copernicus data released Tuesday shows temperatures averaged 14.4 degrees Celsius in March, exceeding the previous record in 2016 by a tenth of a degree.
It was 1.68 degrees Celsius warmer than in the late 1800s, the base used for temperatures before the burning of fossil fuels began scaling up.
Climate scientists attribute most of the record heat to human-caused climate change from carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

CRA's handling of bare trust reporting rules needs "systemic review," MP says
The Canada Revenue Agency continues to face criticism over its decision to retract its requirement for Canadians to report bare trusts for this tax year, and now a Conservative MP wants a "systemic review" into the handling of the issue.
Earlier this year, there were concerns about facing a hefty penalty if the trusts weren't reported by April 2, sending Canadians scrambling to accountants for help, but less than a week before the deadline, the agency decided to no longer require the reporting.
As Sean Previl reports, the MP's call is not the only call the ombudsperson has received and it's looking into the issue, though it won't say if a review will happen.

In the top story tonight, the total solar eclipse mesmerized millions of people in Canada, giving them the chance to see the moon completely obscure the sun, which briefly plunged their day into darkness.
The former minister of democratic institutions said she was told after the October 2019 federal election that Canada's spy agency had seen low-level foreign interference activities by China. Karina Gould, who held the portfolio from early 2017 to November 2019, said in a classified interview last month that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service indicated the activities were similar to what had been seen in the past.
Under a protocol ushered in by the Liberals, there would be a public announcement if a panel of bureaucrats determined that an incident — or an accumulation of incidents — threatened Canada's ability to have a free and fair election. There was no such announcement concerning either the 2019 or 2021 general elections.

New CSIS documents have come to light at the public inquiry into alleged foreign interference in Canada's electoral processes. Nicaragua is asking the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to stop Germany's supply of weapons to Israel, arguing Germany is enabling acts of genocide and breaching humanitarian law. Redmond Shannon explains what's behind Germany's support of Israel and what comes next in the ICJ case.

Mercedes Stephenson explains how that money will be spent in the face of new threats and how this cash still falls short of NATO's spending targets.
Plus, seeing the total solar eclipse in-person depended on more than its path of totality, as weather conditions played a key role in getting the best view. Eric Sorensen moonlights as an eclipse chaser for a day, road-tripping through eastern Ontario to experience the extraordinary event.

In the top story tonight, the total solar eclipse mesmerized millions of people in Canada, giving them the chance to see the moon completely obscure the sun, which briefly plunged their day into darkness. Jeff Semple reports from Niagara Falls, Ont., which was in the eclipse's path of totality and spoke with enthusiasts about what they thought of the rare celestial event.
While eclipse chasers always hope for a cloudless sky during the rare event, retired New Brunswick scientist David Hunter devised a way for enthusiasts to see one regardless of weather conditions or location. Heidi Petracek reports on how Hunter provided people a view from far above of the total solar eclipse.
New CSIS documents have come to light at the public inquiry into alleged foreign interference in Canada's electoral processes. As David Akin explains, the redacted papers detail briefings given to senior officials in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office after Global News and The Globe and Mail first reported of allegations of foreign interference by China.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pledging $8.1 billion in new defence spending over the next five years, as part of a larger $73 billion spending plan through the next two decades.
